Default townhouse stair width

Hi, there,

could someone please to tell me the minimum width of townhouse stair in BC code? and the height?

I am wondering if I can move my sofa into the townhouse I'd like to buy. the townhouse hase 3 stories, the first one is a garage, and a narrow stair leads to the living room on the second floor. and also there is a sharp turn at the end of the stairs leads to the living room, the sofa is 7'2" in length, 40" in width and 3' in height.

thanks very much

Eric

Hi Eric,

Here are the BC code requirements for stairs..

9.8.2.1. Stair Width
1) Required exit stairs and public stairs shall have a width of not less than 900 mm.

2) At least one stair between each floor level within a dwelling unit, and exterior stairs serving a single dwelling unit except required exit stairs, shall have a width of not less than 860 mm.

9.8.2.2. Height over Stairs
1) The clear height over stairs, measured vertically from a line drawn through the leading edges of the treads, shall be not less than

a)1 950 mm for stairs within dwelling units, and

b)2 050 mm for stairs not within dwelling units.

Hope this helps

Ken,

thanks very much

860mm looks prety narrow, the standard sofa may be bigger than that.

36" wall to wall.
31.5" one handrail to wall.
27" rail to rail with two handrails.

Must be 4 risers high to be called stairs.
