Basics & Theory

For Construction Pros: Basics Of Concrete Waterproofing
For Construction Pros article describes sheet membranes and polymer sprays, the two basic types of waterproofing materials, as well as how to handle these products, and how to apply them according to contract specifications.
Issues & Performance

RDH: Osmosis & Blistering of Liquid Applied Waterproofing Membranes
RDH Building Science says the transport of water through waterproofing membranes over concrete substrates resulting in water-filled blisters and leaks has been demonstrated by the authors to be caused by osmosis. The authors have developed a protocol to measure the osmotic flow and evaluate the risk of osmotic blistering in waterproofing membranes.

RDH: Osmosis. The Bane Of Liquid Applied Waterproofing Membranes
Graham Finch of RDH Building Engineering presented this online slide show, The Bane of Liquid Applied Waterproofing Membranes Presentation, at the 18th Annual Westford Symposium, Building Science Summer Camp. It covers history of cold applied liquid waterproofing membranes up to discovery and proof of osmotic blistering failure, and results from recent testing of various membrane types.

BCBEC: Integral Waterproofing
BC Building Envelope Council online slide show presentation by JRS Engineering uses case studies of two large high-rise projects in Vancouver to describe their process of reviewing and designing the appropriate waterproofing systems. (PDF)

Concrete Network: Foundation Waterproofing & Foundation Drainage
Concrete Network describes how to waterproof foundations and keep interior spaces dry. They include information about moving water away from the foundation, preventing moisture from moving through walls, and ground surface treatments to direct water away.

GBA: Installing Basement Waterproofing from Negative Side
Green Building Advisor describes the difficult issue of waterproofing a basement from the inside, or what is called negative side waterproofing.

GBA: Installing Proper Foundation Drains
Green Building Advisor describes how proper installation of footing drains keeps basements dry from the outside.
